Lecturer Mathematics Education & Director of the Mathematics Learning Centre

Associate Professor Olivia Fitzmaurice began her academic journey at the University of Limerick (UL), where she trained as a teacher of Physical Education and Mathematics in 1996. After several years of teaching at the secondary level, she pursued further studies, earning a Higher Diploma in Pure Mathematics from Maynooth University.

In 2001, with the establishment of the Mathematics Learning Centre (MLC) at UL, Olivia returned to take up a role within the centre while embarking on a PhD in Mathematics Education under the supervision of Professor John O’Donoghue. By 2003, she had assumed the position of full-time manager of the MLC, and in 2006, she successfully completed her doctorate.

Olivia’s academic career continued to flourish, and in 2010, she began lecturing in both mathematics and mathematics pedagogy within UL’s Initial Teacher Education mathematics programs. She also took on the role of Academic Director of the MLC. Currently, she serves as a senior lecturer in mathematics education within the School of Education at UL, contributing to both undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education programs.

Olivia was a key member of the UL team who led the CPD for secondary school mathematics teachers in the Project Maths pilot schools. Her research primarily explores the mathematical knowledge of preservice mathematics teachers and the effective delivery of mathematics learning support.
