Professor Diana Coben, PhD FRSA FHEA, is Emeritus Professor of Adult Numeracy at King’s College London and Visiting Professor in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of East Anglia, UK.

Title of talk:

Numeracy for Nursing: A challenge for safety-critical workplace mathematics

Abstract:

This seminar will outline current thinking on numeracy for Nursing drawing on my long-term interest in safety-critical workplaces and in particular, my experience as a member of an inter-disciplinary international team undertaking translational research in this critically important area.

 

 

 

Biography:

Diana’s research focuses on the policy and politics of adult education viewed from an international comparative perspective, particularly with regard to adult numeracy and literacy. She is especially interested in numeracy in safety-critical work contexts and is a strong advocate of use-inspired interdisciplinary research, exemplified in her work on numeracy for Nursing - see the ‘Safety in Numbers’ Special Issue of Nurse Education in Practice https://www.nurseeducationinpractice.com/content/safety.

She is a member the Expert Group brought together by UNESCO’s Institute of Lifelong Learning to advise on monitoring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.6: By 2030, ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy”.

Diana was Founding Chair and is now an Honorary Trustee of Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM) an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults: https://www.alm-online.net/. She was also a founder-member of the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy (NRDC) in England and from 2011-17 she was Director of New Zealand’s National Centre of Literacy and Numeracy for Adults and Professor of Education at the University of Waikato.
