PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA IN MATHEMATICS FOR TEACHING (PDMT) PART-TIME

The Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching (Level 8)/Dioplóma Gairmiúil sa Mhatamaitic don Mhúinteoireachtis a major national CPD initiative in mathematics education led by Epi•Stem, The Nataional Centre for STEM Education at the University of Limerick. The contract for the diploma was awarded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) in 2019 after a competitive tendering process.

The PDMT is a partnership of seven Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) including University of Limerick, University of Galway, Dublin City University, Technological University Dublin, Munster Technological University, Atlantic Technological University, South East Technological University. This partnership was established for the purpose of delivering the course, achieved by having distributed centres for the delivery of teaching and tutorial support nationally.

The programme is closely aligned with the needs of out-of-field teachers of mathematics, the new mathematics curriculum and the requirements of the Teaching Council. Registered post-primary teachers who graduate from the programme are deemed by the Teaching Council to have met the Council’s requirements for Mathematics teaching in post-primary schools.

The diploma is fully funded by the HEA as part of the national strategy to support the implementation of the new mathematics curriculum (Project Maths) and improve standards in mathematics education in post-primary schools by upskilling out-of-field teachers of mathematics.

This university accredited professional diploma is delivered nationally in a blended learning format through local nodes in associate partner institutions located in the regions, in face-to-face and/or on-line modalities.

The first cohort of teachers  graduated from the PDMT V2 programme in September 2023. Currently two further cohorts are engaged on the diploma and a further cohort  has been approved for January 2024.
