Dr. Michelle Starr, EPI•STEM Research Centre for STEM Education presented a working paper at the British Sociological Association (BSA) Annual Conference 2025, held at the University of Manchester. The theme of this year’s conference, ‘Social Transformations’, recognises the work of sociology and its positive influence on individual lives and driving social change, while addressing the complexities of local and global challenges.

Dr. Michelle Starr’s presentation argued for a critical sociological lens in STEM education across all levels—to include the broader socio-political, historical, and cultural contexts in which STEM knowledge is created, used, and valued. This approach empowers learners to recognise systemic inequities within and beyond scientific fields and to see themselves as agents capable of enacting change.

Crucially, this work positions STEM education as a platform for civic engagement, encouraging students to reflect on their values and responsibilities in a rapidly transforming world. It contributes to a broader vision of education—one that integrates ethical reflection, societal relevance, and a commitment to justice alongside technical competence.

Dr. Michelle Starr’s contribution aligns closely with the BSA 2025 theme – emphasising meaningful social transformation begins in the classroom. Her work calls for a reimagining of STEM education not just as a path to workforce readiness, but as a catalyst for ethical awareness and transformative action.
