Dr Tom Carroll, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics,
University College Cork

Tuesday 9th May 14h00 to 15h00, Room A1-065

Title of talk:

Transitioning to e-assessment in mathematics education

Abstract:

Transitioning to e-assessment in mathematics education’ is a joint project between UCC and CIT funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning. The aims of the project are to increase student engagement, improve students' key numerate skills, manage lecturer workload, and build capacity so that e-assessment can become a mainstream component of mathematics courses, maximizing its potential for improved student learning. The platform for this initiative is the Numbas system, developed and maintained at the University of Newcastle. In this talk, I will outline the project in more detail,  and describe our experiences of developing online assessments for some large first year mathematics and statistics courses at UCC and CIT. The resources developed by the project team will be demonstrated and the impact of the project will be considered.
